N/B: The portal always gives you a message near the footer which says: Please note that you can only hold up to 100,000 KES in your Mpesa account. Make sure your Mpesa account can hold your withdrawal balance.  I think this is one of the bottlenecks for you guys who want to withdraw thousands from your online account. Maybe Safaricom will review this limit one time.

Update!

Post-Covid-19, you can withdraw more than 100,000

Ad the transaction is immediate.

How to Top Up your PayPal Account Using Mpesa

Sometimes, you may wish to top up your PayPal account using Mpesa to buy stuff online or pay for services such as web hosting, domain names or any other service.

In this case, you will need to top up your PayPal account.

Here are the steps that you should follow:

Step 1

Deposit some money into your Mpesa account the normal way by visiting an Mpesa agent.

You can also use the money that is already in your Mpesa account, no worries.

Step 2

Open your M-PESA, select “Lipa na M-PESA”, then “Pay Bill”.

Enter 800088 as the business number, and your phone number as the account number.

And that’s all!

You will receive an SMS confirming that USD was added to your PayPal balance. You can also check the status on the Transaction History page.

Mpesa to PayPal Calculator

If you want to know the exact amount of money that will be credited to your PayPal account, you should follow the above-mentioned steps of withdrawing money from PayPal to Mpesa.

However, when you reach Step 5, you should click on “Top Up To PayPal”.

Here you will get the instructions and a calculator.

Calculate the KES amount you need to convert to get the USD amount you want in your PayPal account.

For instance, if you need $1000 in your PayPal account, the calculator shows that you need to have 105,020 in your MPesa account. This may be a limitation if you want to deposit large amounts of money into your PayPal account since MPesa has an account upper limit.

Background to the Story of Withdrawing Online Money in Kenya

Following a deal between Safaricom and PayPal, it is now possible to withdraw your cash from your PayPal account directly to your Mpesa account.

Effective from Monday, April 9th, 2018, the move aims to allow PayPal users to withdraw their funds easily to their mobile wallets and thereafter withdraw from more than 148,000 MPesa agents in Kenya.

The move allows PayPal customers in Kenya to link their accounts to their Mpesa accounts.

Before this, the only options of withdrawing directly from PayPal were through Equity bank or through Payoneer Master Card.

Using the Equity Bank option, PayPal customers had to open bank accounts with Equity Bank and link their accounts with their PayPal accounts for them to withdraw funds within three business days.

Withdrawals could be done at any Equity Bank branch in the country, using ATM machines, Easy Pay App or Equity Bank agents across the country. Equity bank recently revised the PayPal withdrawal charges.

The funds’ transfer is made possible through TransferTo, a cross-border mobile payments network.

Safaricom will be the fast telecommunication company to allow PayPal to mobile wallet money transfer in Kenya.  This will help Mpesa to establish itself as a brand and also allow Kenyans to transact in the global arena with ease. There are high chances that many Kenyans will open PayPal accounts and establish many online e-commerce businesses.

Mpesa’s collaboration with PayPal will open Kenya to the global marketplace and enhance e-commerce for Kenyan entrepreneurs. The collaboration also ushers in a new era of quick and convenient transfer of money beyond the borders of Kenya according to Joseph Ogutu, the Director of Strategy in Safaricom.

To make online purchases, customers will be required to set up PayPal accounts, which they can top up in real-time using their M-PESA balances.

One of the things that have been hindering Kenyans from participating in e-commerce is the means of payment. Mpesa has made it possible to withdraw directly from PayPal within two hours to a few days depending on the amount.

More Kenyans are now able to shop or sell their goods and services online to more than 210 million customers who are already using PayPal.

PayPal allows users to transact in 25 accepted currencies.

Recently the PayPal General Manager for the Middle East, Africa, and Russia, Efi Dahan said

“We are excıted to brıng the M-PESA mobile wallet and PayPal joint services to the Kenyan market, which makes it more convenient and secure to withdraw and add money to their accounts while participating in the global digital economy”.

The new service will give Kenyan businesses the opportunity to boost their reach and grow internationally.
